eLINIA shortlisted for the UK IT Awards Environmental Project of the Year.

eLINIA has been shortlisted for the UK IT Awards Environmental Project of the Year. The awards are a joint venture between BCS and Computing magazine and celebrate best practice, innovation and excellence.

eLINIA's and the National Trust have been working on a project which has enabled the charity to cut the energy consumption of its data centres by almost 70% and its costs by an estimated £168,000 a year.  The National Trust's IT infrastructure has moved to eLINIA's green data centre. The data centre is powered by a converted power station which generates hot water and electricity by burning wood chips and fibre cubes made from used paper and cardboard. This clean power reduces the National Trust's carbon emissions.

Commenting on the project, Steve Heath, Head of Infrastructure at the National Trust, said: "Conserving the environment is at the heart of what the National Trust does and introducing IT systems that minimise our impact on the environment is key to promoting this aim.  Add to this the fact that as a charitable body, we need to ensure our funds are being used in the most cost-effective way and it becomes clear why a project that has revamped and streamlined our IT, limited our carbon footprint and saved us money, is deemed to have been such a success."

This project has made a discernable difference to the National Trust, both economically and environmentally, so it's great to have our work recognised said James Carnie, Technical Architect at eLINIA.  Robin Booth, Publishing Director of Computing commented: The Awards are a showcase for the very best in the UK IT industry and those who have been announced as finalists can be very proud of their outstanding achievement. The variety of entrants emphasises not only the value of IT today, but also the way which it touches so many areas of life.

The winners of the UK IT Awards will be announced on 12 November at The Battersea Events Arena, London.
